On the couch

Kids can shout their guess before the answer comes. Ask again on the couch, and see who remembers!

  1. In the video, Hoots asks:

Where does the yellow come from? Does the tree paint it on, or was it there all along?

    The answer

It was there all along! All summer the green covers it up. In the fall, when the days get shorter and cooler, the tree stops making the green, and the yellow and orange finally show. Some trees, like maples, make brand-new red from the sugar left in their leaves.

  2. After watching

Go on a leaf hunt together: can you find a green leaf, a yellow one, an orange one and a red one?
